Creating lighting layers within a dining area is a great way, to not just light the space but also create a mood or atmosphere that will help friends and family feel relaxed and welcome within your home. Mixing multiple pendant lights or one large dramatic light piece over the dining area but then in addition, filling other pockets of space with a floor lamp, table lamp or wall light – is a great way to create layering, depth and balance into your dining space.
You can use lighting to demarcate a dining area in an open-plan room by visually dividing a kitchen area or a lounge area from your dining table. At Curiousa we often achieve this by creating a different look from the dining to the adjacent area. For example, we might have a line of pendants over the dining table but in the kitchen, we contrast this using similarly shaped pendants but create a cluster of lights with some colour links. This will still visually link the spaces but help divide them too.
The height at which you hang your light over a dining table will be dependent on the size of the fixture and the size of your space. The general recommendation is 60cm-80cm above the tabletop. You may want to position larger fixtures with higher ceilings slightly higher as they can dominate the space. There is an unwritten rule that the pendant light is positioned well if you can look under it when sitting at the table and is at approximate eye level when you stand.
